Former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage says his position with regard to the match-fixing allegations relating to the 2011 Cricket World Cup remains the same.

In June, Aluthgamage revealed that the 2011 cricket World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India was fixed.

Releasing a video on Facebook, Aluthgamage revealed further details on the allegations, stating how the match was fixed without the involvement of the players.

He went on to speak about spot fixing and how fixing can happen on team selection.

He said as the Sports Minister and responsible individual at the time of the tournament, he informed the relevant officials immediately upon being made aware of the match-fixing incident.

“A discussion was held with officials from the Ministry of Sports and Sri lanka Cricket on the measures to be taken in this regard. That is when I realised we do not have laws pertaining to the prevention of corruption in sports’, he said.

Aluthgamage said he took this opportunity to notify the Government and draft a law on the prevention of corruption in sports, paving the way for a committee to be appointed in 2013 in this regard.

A proposal was also submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers on the law in 2013 and was subsequently approved, making Sri Lanka the first country to approve a law pertaining to the prevention of corruption in sports, he added.
