Vehicle import ban : Govt reveals time frame

The Government has decided to suspend the import of vehicles for the next one year.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday (03) that the decision was taken to curb currency outflows.

Sri Lanka is currently facing a currency exchange crisis as a result of the impact caused to the economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Government has been forced to take certain measures to control the currency exchange, he said.

Minister Rambukwella further said that despite the import ban being extended, Sri Lanka was currently in stock of vehicles sufficient for the next one year.

Cabinet deliberates reopening of airports

Meanwhile, Co- Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirane said State Officials who have been issued permits to purchase vehicles will have to settle for those found in the local market.
