A 7 week old infant has died while being treated for Covid-19 at the intensive care unit of the Lady Ridgeway hospital in Colombo.

The said infant is reported to be from Welimada. She was initially admitted to the Welimada hospital due to an illness and then later transferred to the Badulla hospital for further treatment. It was confirmed that the infant had contracted Covid-19 following tests done there.

Director of Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Dr. P. Wijesooriya in a press briefing today (07) explained further about the death of the infant.

“The mother of the child also was identified as COVID positive and the father is currently being quarantined. The infant was admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital in critical condition around 3:00 am on the 5th of this month and transferred to the ICU” he said.

He also said that the child had heart anomalies at birth and probability of saving the child’s life would have been higher if the child had not contracted Covid-19.

Doctor Wijesooriya went on to say that the body of the infant was handed over to the relatives to conduct the burial based on the instructions of Director General of Health. (NewsWire)
