Security has been beefed up at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake, following media reports that the airport had received an email detailing a potential attack on the location.

According to The Morning newspaper, Airport Duty Manager Ruwan Priyadarshana had confirmed that despite this alleged threat, operations at the BIA continue to function as normal.

Stating that his Department had been informed in this regard, he said despite the threat, operations are continuing as usual and security has been tightened.

He added that further information cannot be revealed as the matter falls under the purview of the State Intelligence Service (SIS).

Several media institutions had reported yesterday that an email had been received via the official BIA website, threatening an attack on the airport.

The reports further claimed that the said email had revealed that the BIA and other Government institutions would be attacked on 20th September.

The email had also stated that the attack will be carried out if four persons named in the email are not released. (NewsWire)
