The Sri Lanka Customs Department states that nearly 400 vehicles imported to Sri Lanka are currently decaying in the port premises due to a ban on the importation of vehicles.

Customs has sent a letter to the Ministry of Finance inquiring whether these vehicles will be confiscated as they have been ordered after the government imposed a vehicle import ban after March 2020.

In the relevant letter, the Customs Department has informed the Ministry of Finance that these vehicles which were ordered after the active ban on the importation of vehicles are currently in violation of the operational law.

Customs Spokesman Sudathnada Silva said that there are more than 300 such vehicles in the port premises now.

Earlier, the government stated that vehicles imported against the ban would be confiscated and handed over to state institutions. (NewsWire)
