Booster dose: Pfizer vaccine for above 60 in 08 districts from tomorrow

The 3rd or booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will be administered to those above 60-years of age in selected areas from tomorrow (17). 

State Minister Professor Channa Jayasumana said the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine would be provided as the booster dose. 

He said the inoculation of the third dose will be carried out in the Western and Southern Provinces and in the Anuradhapura and Ampara districts. 

State Minister Jayasumana revealed that those above 60-years who are fully vaccinated or have already obtained the required double vaccine shots must have completed three months after their second dose to be eligible to receive the booster dose. 

In September, Sri Lankan health authorities decided to administer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine as the third dose for several categories.

Director-General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena said that the 3rd dose will be administered to selected groups initially on the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO).

It was announced that those who are above 60 years and have taken the Sinopharm or AstraZeneca vaccine as the first and 2nd dose, those with illnesses between the ages of 30 -60. those with cancer & kidney diseases, and health and frontline workers will be given the booster shot.

The Government commenced administering the Pfizer vaccine as the booster shot to the Tri-forces, Police, Tourism sector, and Frontline workers in November. (NewsWire)
