Five Iranian women footballers granted asylum by Australia

U.S. President Donald Trump said that Australia has “taken care of” five members of Iran women’s national football team who reportedly sought protection after fears they could face punishment upon returning to Iran.

In a statement on social media, Trump said he had spoken with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who assured him that the five players were safe and under the care of Australian authorities.

The development comes after the Iranian women’s team faced backlash at home during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia, when several players refused to sing Iran’s national anthem before a match, an act widely interpreted as a silent protest.

Iranian state media reportedly labelled the players “traitors,” raising concerns among activists and rights groups that they could face arrest or other punishment if they returned to the country.

Following the tournament, five players reportedly left the team’s camp in Australia and sought refuge with the assistance of Australian authorities and police, amid fears for their safety.

Trump urged Australia to grant asylum to the players, warning that they could face severe consequences if forced to return to Iran. He also indicated that the United States would consider offering refuge if Australia declined to do so.

Australian officials have not publicly confirmed details of the players’ status but said the situation is being handled in accordance with immigration and protection procedures. (Newswire)
