Former IGP C.D. Wickramaratne laid to rest with full police honours

The funeral of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne was held with full police honours at the Borella Cemetery on Monday (20).

IGP Wickramaratne, 63, was found with a gunshot wound at his residence on July 17. Police suspect the former IGP died by suicide using the firearm of his personal security officer.

An open verdict was returned following the post-mortem examination into his death.

IGP Wickramaratne served as Sri Lanka’s 35th Inspector General of Police. He joined the Police Department in 1986 and was appointed Acting IGP following the suspension of then IGP Pujith Jayasundara after the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

He was officially appointed Inspector General of Police on Nov. 27, 2020.

Although he was due to retire on March 25, 2023, his tenure was extended on several occasions by then President Ranil Wickremesinghe until a new IGP was appointed. He retired from the post on Nov. 23, 2023. (Newswire)
