The husband of the Assistant Divisional Secretary of Chavakachcheri in Jaffna, Thamilini Sadeesan, was arrested by officials from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Saturday (19) in connection with her death.
According to the Divaina newspaper, the woman was hospitalised with burn injuries on 15 February this year. Both she and her husband had initially told hospital staff and police that her body caught fire while attempting to light a mosquito coil that night.
However, following a complaint lodged by her grieving parents and relatives with the Kopay Police, citing serious suspicions surrounding the death, the case was referred to the Criminal Investigations Department.
Subsequent police investigations revealed that her husband had allegedly set her body on fire, resulting in her death, and that at the time of her death, she was six months pregnant.
The victim’s husband, a Grama Niladhari officer, was taken into custody on suspicion on Saturday and transported to Colombo for further questioning. (Newswire)
