Sri Lanka’s long-standing humanitarian leader Kushil Gunasekera has been honoured with the One World One Family Humanitarian Award 2025 at the One World One Family World Cultural Festival, in recognition of more than two decades of service dedicated to uplifting vulnerable communities across the country.

Gunasekera, founder of the Foundation of Goodness, was recognised for his sustained efforts in bridging the urban–rural divide through a holistic empowerment model that spans education, livelihoods, sports, women’s development and technology. His work has supported over one million beneficiaries through 23 empowerment centres established nationwide.

The citation highlighted his role in rebuilding devastated communities following the 2004 tsunami and his commitment to fostering unity beyond race, religion and borders. Among his key contributions is the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and Sports Academy in Seenigama, which has become a hub for youth development and community resilience.

Gunasekera is also an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), Lord’s, and the first Sri Lankan to receive the Points of Light Award from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, recognising outstanding voluntary service.

Organisers described him as a leader who embodies the philosophy that “goodness is the one investment that never fails,” noting that his life’s work reflects service as a way of life and compassion in action.
