1297 Accident fatalities in 2026: Police reveal more details

A total of 1,297 people have lost their lives in road accidents across Sri Lanka between January 1 and June 16, 2026, according to data released by Sri Lanka Police.

Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of deaths in the affected group, with 448 deaths recorded during the period. Motorcyclists were the second most fatal, with 444 deaths.

Statistics also show that 124 passengers, 109 drivers, 85 cyclists, 84 pillion riders and three others were killed in road accidents during the first half of the year.

Police urge motorists and pedestrians to exercise greater caution and comply with traffic regulations to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the road. (Newswire)
