US President Donald Trump said that “very strong talks” are underway with Iran, expressing optimism that a potential deal could bring an end to the ongoing conflict.

Speaking to reporters at a Florida airport, Trump claimed that Iran is keen to reach an agreement, stating, “They want to make a deal, we want to make a deal.”

He said US envoys have been engaged in discussions with a “respected” Iranian leader, though not with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Trump added that any agreement would require Iran to give up its enriched uranium stockpile.

The US President further stated that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen “very soon” if a deal is reached, calling such an outcome “a great start for Iran and the region.”

However, he noted that there is no guarantee that an agreement will be finalised.

Trump also claimed that it was Iran that initiated contact for talks.

Earlier, in an interview with Fox Business Network, Trump said Tehran “badly” wants a deal and suggested that an agreement could be reached within five days.

He added that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were engaged in talks as recently as Sunday night. (Newswire)
