Five people were killed after a tipper truck collided with a tractor carrying 10 people on the Wellawaya-Monaragala Road in the Kumbukkana area early today (Aug. 21), police said.
The accident occurred on the Kalu Bridge when the tipper truck travelling towards Wellawaya collided with the tractor and trailer travelling in the opposite direction.
Eight people travelling in the trailer sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Monaragala Hospital. Five of them later succumbed to their injuries, while the remaining three are receiving treatment at the hospital.
The deceased, aged 21, 26, 31, 55 and 56, were residents of Dodamgaslanda, Buttala and Horabokka.
The drivers of both the tipper truck and tractor have been arrested, and the Monaragala Police are conducting further investigations. (Newswire/ Image- Accident1st)
