Two inmates were killed and 35 others injured following a clash between two groups of inmates at Negombo Prison this afternoon (5), prison authorities said.
Following the incident, a group of female inmates climbed onto the prison roof and launched a protest. A group of male inmates also reportedly climbed onto the rooftop and began a separate protest.
The injured inmates were admitted to the Negombo Hospital for treatment.
Two inmates who sustained serious injuries in the clash later died, while two others with critical injuries were transferred to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo for further treatment.
Prison authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. (Newswire)
