The Sri Lankan government has officially gazetted the Bill for the Twenty Second Amendment to the Constitution, proposing changes to the retirement age of superior court judges and the number of Court of Appeal judges.
According to the Bill published in the Gazette Extraordinary on Friday (7), the retirement age of Supreme Court judges will be increased to 67 years, while the retirement age of Court of Appeal judges will be set at 65 years. The Bill also provides that the Chief Justice will retire either upon reaching the age of 67 or after completing six years in office, whichever occurs first.
The proposed amendment also seeks to increase the maximum number of Court of Appeal judges from 19 to 24.
The Bill, titled the Twenty Second Amendment to the Constitution, was ordered to be published by the Minister of Justice and National Integration. (Newswire)
