A police constable attached to the Delwala Police Station has been seriously injured and admitted to hospital after being dragged by a car whose occupants attempted to evade a police inspection.

The incident occurred when a team of police officers tried to inspect a vehicle following information that a suspect with outstanding warrants was inside. When officers ordered the driver to stop, the vehicle suddenly accelerated in defiance of police instructions.

In an attempt to prevent the car from fleeing, one police constable jumped onto the bonnet and held on, but the driver continued to drive for approximately 1.5 kilometres without stopping. The officer later fell onto the road and sustained serious injuries.

He was immediately admitted to the Ratnapura Teaching Hospital for treatment. Police say he is currently receiving medical care.

Investigations have revealed that the driver later abandoned the vehicle on a side road and fled the scene. Further inquiries have also indicated that the vehicle belongs to a member of the Podujana Eksath Peramuna representing the Nivithigala Pradeshiya Sabha, and that the warrant was reportedly issued against him.

Delwala Police have launched further investigations to locate and arrest the suspect. (Newswire)
