Authorities have temporarily taken 28 vehicles off the road after a surprise inspection in the Talawakelle area found them unfit for operation, Nuwara Eliya District Chief Motor Vehicle Inspector Jaliya Bandara said.
Officials inspected 40 vehicles, including buses, cars, motorcycles, vans, lorries and three-wheelers, to determine whether they met roadworthiness requirements.
The inspection was conducted jointly by officers from the Nuwara Eliya Police Division’s Traffic Unit and motor vehicle inspectors.
Of the vehicles inspected, 28 were found to have various defects and were temporarily prohibited from operating. Their revenue licences were also taken into the custody of authorities.
The vehicles taken off the road included four private buses and 15 three-wheelers.
Bandara said the vehicles would not be permitted to operate until the identified defects are rectified and they are presented for reinspection.
The operation was conducted as part of efforts to reduce road accidents, with similar vehicle inspections being carried out across the Nuwara Eliya District, he added. (Newswire/AI image)
