The Cabinet has approved the controversial proposal to extend the retirement age of judges by two years.

The move has drawn opposition from senior members of the legal fraternity, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and opposition political parties.

The proposal will now have to be presented to Parliament for approval.

As the proposed change requires a constitutional amendment, it would need a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The Government currently commands the required two-thirds majority to pass the amendment. (Newswire)
