The Aruwakkalu Waste Management Project is to continue despite some environmental concerns raised in the past.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had briefed the cabinet on the need to go ahead with the project while addressing any concerns.

Cabinet co-spokesman Ramesh Pathirana said that as per the agreement reached on the project, if the project is suspended the Government could face legal action.

As a result cabinet had approved a proposal to move ahead with the project.

The Aruwakkalu Waste Management Project was launched following the Meethotamulla garbage dump tragedy in 2017 as a sustainable and scientific solution to the solid waste disposal problem.

A Chinese consortium had been awarded the contract for the design, supply and installation/construction of the Municipal Solid Waste Sanitary Landfill Disposal Facility at Aruwakkalu.

The contract had been awarded to a consortium between China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) and the Southwest Municipal Engineering and Research Institute of China (SEMEDRIC).
