Key decisions initiated by National Carrier SriLankan Airlines have helped it secure a savings of $ 30 million per annum, Chairman Ashok Pathirage said.

The Airline successfully implemented efficient and effective measures related to its Human Resource Management operations to face the challenges posed by the global COVID-19 outbreak.

Five key decision that attributed to the savings:

  1. A maximum pay cut of 25% for three months for those earning above Rs. 100,000 per month.
  2. Release of 400 contracted employees including pilots on no-pay leave and a further 500 from outsourced services.
  3. Plans to retake those who are on no-pay leave when operations are restored to optimum level in the future.
  4. The national carrier is planning a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) aimed at shedding around 500 permanent employees.
  5. The airline is also realigning its senior management team to achieve better results in the new norm post -COVID.

Pathirage said SriLankan Airlines’ savings of $ 30 million per annum is also due to the many renegotiated or cancelled contracts given the post-COVID challenges.

The monthly salary bill of the National Carrier is now estimated at $ 7 million. (Newswire)
