Health Ministry warns of new influenza virus

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health has warned of a new type of Swine Flu reported in China, which has the possibility of developing into a future Influenza pandemic.

Chief Epidemiologist of the Epidemiology Unit, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said Chinese Researchers have revealed that the new virus is a type of the H1N1 Swine Flu, which caused an Influenza pandemic in 2009, but with some changes.

He said the Chinese Researchers have also confirmed that a group of people working in a farm have already been infected with the new virus.

The Chinese Researchers have assured that the virus cannot develop into a pandemic at this juncture, but have warned countries to remain vigilant in this regard, Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said.

Commenting on the existing coronavirus and potential second wave in the future, Dr. Samaraweera said there will always be a possibility of a second wave in Sri Lanka, if health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health are not properly adhered to.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera pointed out that the continuous adhering of proper health guidelines, at a time when the country is returning to normalcy, can secure the safety of the public from the virus in the future. (Newswire)
