Popular actor scammed for Rs 1.2 million over Fake ICC Cricket lottery

A youth has been arrested on charges of defrauding over Rs. 1.2 million from popular Sri Lankan television and movie actor W. Jayasiri under the pretext of winning a lottery worth US$ 85000, Neth FM reported.

The suspect was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) based on a complaint filed by the actor who is a resident of Panadura.

Following investigations into the complaint, officials from the Police Financial Fraud Investigation Unit in Bandarawela had arrested on suspicion the suspect who is a resident of Kosgama.

The suspect is said to have scammed actor W.Jayasiri by sending out an SMS on winning a lottery held by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on the sidelines of the Cricket World Cup amounting to US$ 85, 000.

The actor had reportedly deposited over Rs. 1.2 million in four prominent banks in Panadura to receive the prize as instructed by the suspect as part of the scam.

The Panadura Magistrate Court was presented with facts on the investigation conducted based on the complaint filed by the actor and the four banks involved in the scam have also provided reports on the deposits made in this regard.

Based on the report submitted by a bank located at Hangwella, one account was traced to an individual residing in the Akkaravita area in Kosgama.

The Police said investigations are underway to ascertain if the individual was involved in carrying out the scam in other areas of the country, while he will be produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court. (Newswire)
