Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera has reduced the backlog of over 12,000 cases on child abuse to 851 cases, the Sunday Morning reported.

The Child Protection Unit of the AG’s Department had received nearly 12,968 cases pertaining to incidents of child abuse over the past 18- months.

AG Dappula de Livera is said to have completed a majority of the cases with only 851 pending.

The cases were reportedly filed from the time AG Dappula de Livera assumed duties in May 2019.

The backlog in cases is reported to have been created due to various administrative issues, which the AG was able to clear off.

However, according to the Sunday Morning inside sources have said that the backlog was created as a result of inefficiency displayed by the legal teams that were assigned to handle such cases. (Newswire)
