A pregnant lady who was injured in an accident in the Egoda Uyana area in Moratuwa on Friday (04) has suffered a miscarriage and is in a critical condition at the Colombo National Hospital.

Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the woman’s two daughters aged 07 and 01 had succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

The trio had been hit by a motorcyclist participating in a race while walking across the pedestrian crossing on Friday night.

The 20-year-old motorcyclist has been arrested and remanded.

Following the accident, the Traffic Police have been instructed to carry out special operations to crackdown on car and motorcycle races held promoting undisciplined driving in the Colombo and Gamapaha districts, and suburbs.

The decision has been taken considering the risk posed to the lives of the public due to reckless driving.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the Police also foiled a plan to hold a motorcycle race violating road regulations in the Kimbulawala Junction in Mirihana last night. The Police arrested 24 motorcyclists and also seized their motorcycles.

They were arrested as part of the special operation conducted to crackdown on night races held violating road rules. (NewsWire)
