Shemara Wickramanayake of Sri Lankan descent among Forbes 100 most powerful women

Shemara Wickramanayake of Sri Lankan descent has been listed in the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women 2020 list compiled by the Forbes, alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Wickramanayake, who is the CEO and Managing Director of Australian firm Macquarie Group, has been ranked 29th in the Forbes list.

Shemara Wickremanayake was born in the UK and was raised there as well as in Sri Lanka, and later immigrated to Australia with her parents when she was 13.

She joined the Macquarie Group in 1987 and assumed duties as the Managing Director and CEO of the Group in December 2018.

Prior to her appointment, Wickramanayake worked within Macquarie Capital for 20 years after which she served as head of Macquarie Asset Management in 2008.
