Former South Africa opener Hershelle Gibbs has been suspended as the Coach of the Colombo Kings franchise, the Daily Mirror reported.

The 46-year-old former cricketer initially arrived as a commentator for the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2020 T20 Tournament, but was later appointed as the Colombo Kings coach.

According to sources from the LPL tournament the reasons for his suspension is unclear as yet.

The sources further said Sri Lanka’s Rangana Herath has replaced Gibbs as the coach of the Colombo Kings franchise.

Sports journalist Rex Clementine tweeted it is reportedly speculated that the suspension comes after an altercation with a player of Gibbs’ team.

Hershelle Gibbs’ participation in the LPL tournament commenced with a twitter controversy over his appointment as a commentator for the cricket tournament.

Gibbs initially claimed that he was unaware of his addition to the panel of commentators, following which he was removed from the list by the LPL organizers.

After resolving the alleged misunderstanding on the issue, Gibbs who arrived as a commentator for the LPL 2020 tournament was instead appointed as the coach of the Colombo Kings.

The Colombo Kings have qualified for the LPL 2020 semi- finals alongside the Dambulla Viikings, Jaffna Stallions, and the Galle Gladiators. (NewsWire)
