Nuwara Eliya to get a race track

A proposal has been made to construct a racing track between the Nuwara Eliya Race Course and Nuwara Eliya Gregory Lake, as part of the Nuwara Eliya District Tourism Development Zone project.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Ministry of Urban Development and housing said the project will commence this weekend under the directives of the President and Prime Minister.

The Kotagala Wetland Garden Development Project, Talawakele town beautification project will commence tomorrow (19), while development of the Nuwara Eliya Race Course, Raboda and Thawalantenna Tourism Project will commence on Sunday (20).

Under the project, the Nuwara Eliya Race Course will be developed at a cost of Rs. 700 million, and will be upgraded to accommodate equestrian events.

It has also been proposed to build three stadiums for cricket, football and rugby in the center of the race course.

The Ministry of Urban Development said in addition, a 3.9 km long cable car system is to be installed from Nuwara Eliya to the Nanu Oya railway station.

The project will also see both sides of the roads from Kitulgala to Nuwara Eliya, Nuwara Eliya to Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya to Badulla being developed as a special tourist zone to attract local and foreign tourists.

The Ministry further said the Nuwara Eliya District Tourism Development Zone will be carried out in an environmentally friendly manner. (NewsWire)
