Suspect in Police custody killed following an incident last night – Police

A suspect was killed in police fire following an incident which took place while he was being escorted by the police for an operation in Veyangoda this morning.

Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said 37-year-old Nishantha Kumarasiri from Veyangoda was arrested on charges of attempted murder by the Western Province Crimes Division.

He was arrested for a shooting incident in the Maligathenne area in Veyangoda on 19 December in which a 38-year-old man was injured and is receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

The suspect was escorted on a special operation conducted by the Peliyagoda Western Province Crimes Division today during which an incident had occurred resulting in the death of the suspect.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the Police were enforced to use force to contain the situation in which a 37 –year-old Police Constable was also injured and is currently admitted to the Gampaha Base hospital.

A special team has been appointed to conduct investigations into the incident, while the Police will present facts on the incident to the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court today.

The body of the suspect has been placed at the Wathupitiwala hospital where a post mortem examination will be conducted on court orders. (NewsWire)
