Delays in results of PCR tests over the last five days have resulted in the substantial rise in Covid cases within a day in Sri Lanka exceeding 900 on a daily basis.

Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena said laboratories have caused delays in issuing the reports of PCR tests over the last five days.

According to the Daily Mirror, Dr. Gunawardena said that health authorities are currently engaged in clearing the backlog.

He warned that nearly 900 Covid cases may be reported over the next few days too if the backlog is not cleared.

The Health Services Director General explained that the number of Covid infected patients will reduce to a certain extent, once the backlog of PCR test results is cleared.

Sri Lanka has been reporting nearly 900 Covid cases on a daily basis over the last few weeks.

The highest number of infected individuals have been reported from the Colombo District, while Gampaha, Badulla, Galle, Matara, Matale, Ratnapura and Kalutara have been identified as high- risk areas. (NewsWire)
