A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years rigorous imprisonment on charges of sexually abusing an underage girl.
The suspect who is a resident of Pita Kotte has been accused of molesting a 16-year-old girl at a private Child Development Centre.
The special Police Unit of the National Child Protection Authority had commenced investigations into the incident based on a complaint filed in this regard.
The Attorney General had thereafter filed a case with the Colombo Magistrate’s court against the suspect.
Taking up the case for hearing today, the Court sentenced the suspect to 12 years rigorous imprisonment.
He was further instructed to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000 to the Court and a compensation of Rs. 250,000 to the victim.
The Court further warned that the suspect’s sentence will be extended to another four years of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to settle the ordered compensation to the victim. (NewsWire)
