Met Department predicts change in drought conditions

The Department of Meteorology has predicted a change in the prevailing drought condition from tomorrow (06).

The Met Department said the prevailing dry weather conditions are expected to change as there is a high possibility for showers or thunder showers over most parts of the island.

Several spells of showers have been forecast for the Eastern and Uva Provinces and in the Hambantota and Polonnaruwa districts.

Showers or thunder showers can be expected in several places in the Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts in the evening or night.

The Department said misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Uva and Western Provinces during the morning.

Meanwhile, for the sea areas, the Met Department says showers will occur in the   sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Matara via Hambantota.

It said mainly fair weather will prevail in the other sea areas around the island.

Winds will be north-easterly to easterly in the sea areas around the island, while wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.

The Met Department warned that wind speed may increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttlam and from Galle to Hambantota.

It further said the sea areas extending from Galle to Hambantota will   be fairly rough at times.

However, the sea areas extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttlam can be moderate. (NewsWire)
