Details of Navy operation preventing 24 people from illegally traveling to Canada

Twenty- four (24) Sri Lankans who had attempted to illegally travel to Canada via boat were arrested by the Navy in Kalpitiya, Puttalam yesterday.

The suspects are residents of Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu. The group consists of one woman, three children, and 20 men.

They were arrested after Navy personnel had inspected a lorry that had transported them to Kalpitiya.

Investigations have revealed that the mastermind of the human trafficking racket had obtained between Rs. 300,000-500,000 from the suspects promising to send them to Canada.

The mastermind of the racket has been identified to be operating from Jaffna and the Police have launched investigations to apprehend the perpetrator.

Meanwhile, the suspects will be produced before the Puttalam Magistrate’s Court today. (NewsWire)
