A leopard that was rescued from a snare in the Manipalama farm in Bopathalawa, Agarapathana has died, the Department of Wildlife Conservation reported.

The animal, which was rescued by Wildlife officials on Wednesday (24), had died while receiving treatment at the Randenigala Veterinary Hospital yesterday.

The post mortem report has revealed that the 08-year-old leopard is said to have died due to pneumonia and deep wounds sustained as a result of dragging the snare.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation pointed out there was significant increase in leopards getting trapped in snares in the Central Hills.

The Department further said a number of measures have been taken to curtail further incidents, including the removal of snares and conducting of awareness programmes for residents of the areas. (NewsWire)
