The suspect who was arrested for his involvement in encouraging motorists to honk in protest of closing roads in Borella for the movement of a VVIP convoy, has been granted bail.

The 31-year-old man, who is a resident of Thalawathugoda, Battaramulla, had been arrested by the Borella Police yesterday.

Earlier today, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said vehicles had honked at the convoy of visiting Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe who had passed by the Borella area on Tuesday (27).

He said the suspect had been arrested after an investigation had been launched into a video on the incident that had been circulated on social media.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the man has been accused of obstructing Police officers from carrying out their duties and aiding the illegal gathering of the public.

His actions are also deemed as posing a threat to a visiting dignitary and his VVIP convoy, he added.

The suspect, who had previously resided in Australia for nearly 10-years, has been granted bail after being produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s court today.

Speaking to the media, after being released on bail, the individual extended his apology to the Police and the Government for his actions. (NewsWire)
