The specialist committee appointed to review Ayurvedic and traditional medicine for COVID-19 has ruled out further investigation into the ayurvedic concoction produced by Dhammika Bandara from Kegalle.

The Special Committee said chances of finding any positive effects of the syrup in the treatment of COVID -19 is extremely unlikely.

The Committee appointed by the Ministry of Health further said as a result, interim results do not warrant continuation of the trial on the syrup.

During the first wave of the coronavirus in Sri Lanka, Dhammika Bandara from Kegalle had announced that he had produced an ayurvedic syrup that could cure COVID-19.

He had distributed the syrup to people in Kegalle on multiple occasions, including some that were in violation of the quarantine regulations.

Several Ministers, including Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi who had consumed the syrup had later tested positive for COVID-19.

The Health Ministry was forced to appoint a special committee to review the syrup following its distribution to the public under claims that it could cure COVID-19.

The distribution of the syrup was suspended until the conclusion of the trials conducted by the special committee. (NewsWire)
