The Police have launched a special pilot project using drones to monitor traffic congestions in Colombo.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the project was launched on the advise of the President, together by the Police, Special Task Force, and Sri Lanka Air Force.

The aim of the pilot project is to use modern technology to monitor traffic congestions, suggest alternative routes, and to take action against drivers violating traffic laws.

The project was launched on the High-Level Road in Colombo today, he said.

DIG Ajith Rohana said they intend to implement the project in other areas, such as the Galle Road, Negombo Road, and Parliament Road in the near future.

He said thereafter, it will be introduced to other cities, such as Kandy and Kurunegala.

The Police spokesman said data has revealed that traffic congestions are being caused due to high number of vehicles on the road, and drivers driving in a reckless manner in violation of the Traffic Laws. (NewsWire)
