The Government will take necessary measures to suspend nearly 2 million fake Facebook accounts identified in Sri Lanka, Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella announced.

According to Swarnavahini News, Minister Rambukwella said nearly 27% of Facebook accounts in Sri Lanka have been identified to be fake.

Minister Rambukwella said together with Justice Minister Ali Sabry a proposal has been submitted to the Cabinet for the formulation of new laws to address fake news and fake social media accounts.

The Minister said all fake social media accounts will be immediately suspended following the Cabinet’s approval, in a bid to curtail the publishing of fake news in the country.

It has been observed that some accounts are being used to promote content pertaining to terrorism, extremism, robberies and murders, posing a threat to National security, he said. (NewsWire)
