A spike in Covid cases will continue for atleast another few weeks in Sri Lanka, health authorities warned.

According to the Daily Mirror, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said a downward sprial could be expected thereafter.

He said the health guidelines must be strictly enforced during this period in a bid to prevent the situation from going out of control.

Dr. Hemantha Herath further said the death toll during the current was being caused specifically due to Covid pneumonia.

He pointed out that during the first and second wave, fatalities were caused due to complications from other illnesses when infected with COVID-19.

Dr. Herath said, however, under the current situation, a majority of the deaths are being reported due to the virus alone. (NewsWire)
