Another suspect has been arrested in Mawanella for promoting extremism in connection to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said 29-year-old Mohamed Sahim was arrested in the Hemmathagama area in Mawanella by the Terrorism Investigation Divison (TID) yesterday.

He said the suspect has been arrested for conducting lectures on extremism under the orders of the ringleader of the Easter attacks Zahran Hashim.

The man had conducted the classes in Muttur and Oluvil in December 2018-January 2019 for students who had completed the GCE Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations.

DIG Ajith Roana said the suspect will be detained by the TID under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for further investigations.

He said a total of seven suspects have been arrested so far in connection to promoting extremism in Sri Lanka linked to the Easter attacks.

The arrests have been made following investigations conducted by the TID together with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) into events that had occurred prior to and after the 2019 Easter attacks. (NewsWire)
