A Malawi national has been arrested for swindling money through social media from Sri Lankans.
The Police said the suspect who had arrived in Sri Lanka a few months ago was arrested by the Peliyagoda Police in the Aththidiya area in Dehiwala.
The 30-year-old man is said to have offered a prize worth Rs. 498,000 via Facebook requesting winners to deposit a sum of money to retrieve the prize.
The Police have seized 5g of heroin, 5g of Methamphetamine aka ICE, Rs. 45,000, 2 mobile phones, one laptop, and a number of debit cards from various local banks from the suspect’s possession.
The Police said the suspect will be produced in court today.
They further called on the public not to fall victim to such scams via social media, especially Facebook and Instagram. (NewsWire)
