Over 800 people who had attempted to enter Colombo under the guise of essential services were turned away by the Police yesterday.

Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said the suspects had attempted to enter the city in violation of the islandwide travel restriction that has been enforced in the country.

As per a survey conducted on the vehicles moving during the travel restriction, 28,784 vehicles had entered Colombo yesterday. Among the vehicles, 4,802 were from the Health Services.

DIG Ajith Rohana said, however, 803 people who had attempted to violate the travel restriction were admonished and turned away.

Meanwhile, 454 people in 2,348 vehicles were inspected yesterday at roadblocks set up at the 14 entry/exit points of the Western Province.

The Police Spokesman said 107 people in 54 vehicles had been turned away while attempting to violate the ban imposed on inter-province travel which is in effect during the islandwide travel ban currently in effect.

DIG Ajith Rohana said the Police will monitor vehicle movement during the travel restriction, especially those entering Colombo, today as well. (NewsWire)
