A proposal has been made to charge a deposit of Rs. 10 for 750ml plastic bottles, in a bid to prevent such plastic waste from entering the environment.

The Ministry of Environment has made the proposal with an aim to implement an alternative to the 750ml plastic bottles.

During a meeting with officials from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and plastic bottle manufacturers, subject Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, reiterated that several plastic and polythene products have been banned by the Government to reduce environmental destruction.

Pointing out that a ban on plastic bottles is not practical, the CEA said this was due to the cost and durability of alternative packaging.

As a result, Minister Amaraweera proposed a deposit for 750ml plastic bottles for recycling purposes.

He added that the Ministry is focusing on setting up a joint recycling factory for these plastic bottle manufacturing companies. (NewsWire)
