Sri Lanka reports highest quarantine violation arrests in a single day with 1411 arrests

Over 1400 people have been arrested for violating the quarantine regulations, making it the highest number of arrests to be made in a single day in Sri Lanka.

Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said 1411 people have been arrested in the 24-hour period ending at 06 am today. Among those arrested, 158 are from Kuliyapitiya, 146 from Matale, and 127 from Kandy.

A total of 35,360 people have been arrested for violating the quarantine regulations since October 2020. Legal action has been filed against 34,000 of the suspects.

Meanwhile, four people have been arrested for violating the islandwide travel restriction that has been imposed in the country, following drone operations conducted by the Police in Negombo yesterday.

DIG Rohana said a total of 131 people were arrested in the last 24-hours during drone operations conducted in the Western Province.

The Police also inspected 6,066 people in 3,049 vehicles at the 14 entry/exit points of the Western Province yesterday.

DIG Ajith Rohana said 74 people had attempted to cross the provincial borders in violation of the travel restriction. The suspects were warned and turned away by the Police personnel deployed at the checkpoints. (NewsWire)
