The online sale of alcohol will not be approved during the islandwide travel restriction that is currently enforced in the country, Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said.

He said a request by the Excise Department in this regard will not be approved by the National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 (NOCPC).

The Finance Ministry yesterday approved a proposal by the Excise Department on the sale of liquor via delivery services of supermarkets.

The Excise Department said, however, it requires the approval of the NOCPC to implement the online sale of liquor.

The Head of the NOCPC Army Commander General Shavendra Silva has announced that permission will not be granted in this regard. (NewsWire)
