The Gampaha High Court has ordered the release of former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekera.
Abeysekera was instructed to be released on bail, along with Sub-Inspector Sugath Mendis, by the court today.
The former CID Director was released on conditional bail by the Court of Appeal yesterday. However, he was remanded until 30th June again, as the Court of Appeal’s bail conditions had not been handed over in writing to the Gampaha Magistrates Court.
Upon being handed over the necessary documents, the Gampaha High Court has ordered the release of SSP Shani Abeysekera.
Abeysekera was arrested in July last year and was charged under the Offensive Weapons Act and Explosives Devices Act for fabricating evidence in an investigation related to former DIG Vaas Gunawardena.
Meanwhile, former Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorale too had urged the Government to end its witch-hunt against Abeysekera, warning that the ruling party’s political vendettas were now threatening Sri Lanka’s GSP+ concessions and economic security. (NewsWire)
