An Assistant Agriculture Director and an Agriculture Instructor have been arrested for issuing fake quarantine certificates to release a container consisting of dried areca nuts from the Customs Department.

The Police said the container had been imported from Malaysia to Sri Lanka in August 2020.

The Customs Department had filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) stating that the container had been released using fake documents.

Following investigations conducted into the complaint, the two female Agricultural officers were arrested by the CID yesterday.

The Police said further investigations have revealed that another suspect was also involved in the incident.

The CID is conducting further investigations into the matter and to identify the third suspect. (NewsWire)
