Over 12,000 electricity breakdowns: Weather update for next 24 hours

Over 12,000 electricity breakdowns have been reported due to the inclement weather experienced yesterday.

The Ministry of Power said nearly 475,000 consumers have been affected as a result. 

The Ministry said the power disruptions have been reported in the Puttalam, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Gampaha, and Galle Districts.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said the landslide warning issued to several districts due to the adverse weather conditions has been further extended.

Assistant Director of the Centre Pradeep Kodipilli said the landslide warning has been issued to several districts, including the Kalutara, Galle, and Ratnapura Districts.

The water levels in the Kelani, Gin, Kalu, and Nilwala Rivers have also significantly increased as of last night.

Pradeep Kodipilli said minor floods have been reported in the surrounding areas as a result. 

The Department of Meteorology has predicted that showers or thundershowers will continue at times in the Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North- Western and Southern Provinces today as well. 

Heavy showers of about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts. A few showers will occur in the Northern Province, it said.

The Met Department added that strong gusty winds of up to 60 kmph are likely at times over the western slope of the Central hills and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph at times are likely in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Southern provinces, Trincomalee district.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until further notice due to strong winds and rough seas expected in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota. (NewsWire)
