The Attorney General’s Department today informed the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka that Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harin Fernando will not be arrested until the 1st of September.

Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris informed the court on this matter when the Fundamental Rights (FR) petition, filed by MP Harin Fernando seeking an injunction restraining his arrest, was taken up for hearing today.

MP Harin Fernando told NewsWire that he had filed the FR Petition in April after there were attempts by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to arrest him over a statement made in Parliament on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks.

The SJB MP said the CID had attempted to arrest him under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) after the Presidential Commission of Inquiry appointed to probe the attacks had cleared him of any charges.

“In April, the CID recorded statements from me claiming that my statement in Parliament through which I revealed several facts on the attacks, had contradicted the earlier statements made to the Presidential Commission and the Department,” he said.

The injunction order filed by MP Harin Fernando seeking the court to prevent his arrest was extended today, while the case has been re-fixed for the 1st of September 2021. (NewsWire)
