19 new cases of highly infectious Delta variant found from 4 more areas

Another 19 new cases of the Indian ‘Delta’ variant of Covid-19 have been detected in Sri Lanka. 

Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath told NewsWire that the detections were made in Colombo, Piliyandala, Jaffna, and Kilinochchi.

He said it was reported that some of the infected individuals have been identified in several areas under the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

Dr. Hemanth Herath said a Navy personnel was also among the infected individuals reported as of last evening.

The Delta or Indian variant of the virus was first detected in the Dematagoda area in Colombo. 

Thereafter, a woman from the Madiwela area was detected with the variant, which is considered to be highly transmissible.

The health authorities have taken necessary measures to prevent the further spread of the virus. (NewsWire)
