Weather forecast: Heavy showers expected over several areas

The Department of Meteorology has predicted heavy showers over several areas in Sri Lanka today.

The Department said showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts. 

Several spells of showers will occur in the North-Western Province, while showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa Districts in the evening or night. 

The Met Department said fairly strong winds up to 40-50 kmph can be expected in the western slope of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western Provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee Districts.

Meanwhile, with regard to the sea areas, the department said showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas extending from Colombo to Galle. 

It further said winds will be south-westerly to westerly and the wind speed will be 40-50 kmph in the sea areas around the island. 

The wind speed may increase up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar. 

The Met Department added that the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar can be very rough at times, while the other sea areas around the island can also be rough at times. 

As a result, the Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be vigilant in this regard. (NewsWire)
